Glitch text: choose how far combining marks extend

Glitch text, often called Zalgo text, places combining marks above, through and below ordinary characters. A combining mark usually adds an accent, as in é; stacking several around a letter creates the broken, noisy look. Enter a short word and compare Light, Medium and Heavy. The extra strikethrough and slash choices add a more controlled line across or through the letters. Light keeps the marks closer to the line; Heavy adds a taller stack. Compare a word with tall letters and one with descenders, such as g or y, to see where the marks sit around the shapes. Judge the underlying word as well as the distortion: if the letters disappear into the stack, switch to a lighter setting before copying.

Heavy distortion can extend beyond the text line and overlap nearby words. It also adds many characters to a short phrase, so a username or form with a length limit may reject it or clip the marks. Start with Light when a platform is strict, or apply the effect to one word rather than the whole name. The marks are part of the copied text, so the destination app controls how much of them remains visible. If the copy is cut off, reduce the setting before shortening the essential wording.

The same input and setting produce the same result, which makes it easy to copy again later. A different font or line height can still change how the stack looks. Screen readers may announce the marks one by one or skip the word, so keep names, links and instructions in ordinary text. Use the distorted form as decoration, not as the only way to convey a message. Avoid placing Heavy text next to other lines when overlap would hide letters or buttons.

FAQ

Common questions

Why do glitch marks move or disappear across apps?
Each app and font places stacked marks differently. One may clip them at the line while another lets them extend above or below it. The copied characters are the same; their rendering changes.
What can I try if a platform rejects a glitched name?
A service may limit name length or reject combining marks. Try Light, shorten the phrase or apply the effect to one word. Keep a plain version ready for fields that reject the decorated text.
Can screen readers interpret heavily glitched text?
Often poorly. A reader may announce the marks or skip the word, so keep names and essential information in standard text and use glitching only as decoration.
