Guide

Discord fonts for names, channels and message formatting

Use the preview for a display name, nickname, server title, channel, role, bio or message. These styles are Unicode characters, so recipients do not need a font file installed. Channel names are lowercase, however, and some styles only contain capitals; check the output before using a label. A member whose device lacks a glyph may see a box, so keep the server name and key channel labels readable in plain text too.

For message emphasis, Discord has built-in Markdown: wrap text with ** for bold, * for italic, __ for underline, ~~ for strikethrough, backticks for inline code, || for spoilers, or start a quote with >. At the start of a line, #, ## or ### followed by a space creates a heading; -# followed by a space creates subtext. These controls format messages; they do not style a nickname or server name, where copyable Unicode can help.

Before changing a server label, paste the result into the exact field and check whether Discord accepts it. Some style sets leave lowercase letters, numbers or punctuation unchanged, and symbols can affect how easily people search for a channel. Keep commands, links and instructions in ordinary text. For a banner or emote, use a font file in an image editor so you can size the lettering without changing the text characters. For a group of channels, compare the labels together before choosing a treatment. A mix of elaborate scripts can make the list harder to scan. Keep the useful word recognizable and use decoration consistently so members can distinguish a discussion channel from an announcement channel.

FAQ

Common questions

Will Unicode text work in a Discord nickname or server name?
Yes. Unicode characters can appear in nicknames, display names and server names, though a server bot or naming rule may reject some. Paste a short test first and keep an ordinary spelling available.
What syntax adds bold or strikethrough formatting to a Discord message?
Wrap a phrase in two asterisks for **bold** or two tildes for ~~strikethrough~~. Discord applies that formatting to a message, so it does not depend on decorative Unicode glyph support.
Why might someone else see squares in my Discord name?
Their device may lack a font that draws the selected glyph. Try a different style such as bold, italic or script; support still depends on the device font. Use plain letters if the square remains.
