Guide

Font converter: choose TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 for your next use

Choose TTF or OTF when you need a font file for desktop installation or design software such as Word, Google Docs or Canva. TTF stores TrueType outlines; OTF commonly contains OpenType CFF outlines. WOFF and WOFF2 package font data for websites. WOFF2 is the smaller web option, about 30 per cent below WOFF, and works in every current browser. Pick the output based on where the font will be used, then confirm that the receiving app accepts that format.

Select a font file, choose an output format and save the converted result. The converter repackages the font and preserves its outline system: TTF converted to WOFF2 converts back to TTF, while OTF returns to OTF. It does not redraw curves to turn TrueType outlines into CFF outlines or the reverse. That means format conversion is useful for packaging a font for another environment, but it is not a way to redesign glyphs or change how the typeface is drawn. Keep a copy of the source file until you have checked the export in the target app or website. If the file does not open there, confirm that the destination supports the chosen format and that the original font is readable.

Before making a web version, check the font licence because web embedding may require separate permission. Fonts in the AIFontGen library and fonts you create are already available in TTF, OTF, WOFF and WOFF2. A preview file is for testing on our pages; conversion of a AIFontGen font is available only when your account can download it. Once you save a file, test it in the destination environment and keep the original so you can create another format if your project requirements change. When preparing a website, use WOFF2 for current browsers and add WOFF only when your support needs call for it; for desktop installation, keep a TTF or OTF copy instead.

FAQ

Common questions

Does converting send the font file to a server?
No. The browser reads and converts the file locally. Before conversion, it sends short codes derived from A–Z and a–z shapes so AIFontGen can check whether your account may download one of its fonts.
Why does an OTF export keep its outline type?
OTF often contains CFF curves and TTF contains TrueType curves. Switching systems means redrawing glyphs, which can change their appearance. This converter preserves the original outlines; most apps accept either format.
Which web font format should I choose?
Choose WOFF2 for current browsers: it is smaller than WOFF and supported by current browsers. Add WOFF if your project also needs browsers from before 2016.
Will format conversion alter spacing or glyph quality?
No. WOFF and WOFF2 use lossless compression. Unpacking restores the same outlines, spacing, kerning and font names.
