Image to SVG converter: prepare artwork for a cleaner trace

Start with a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF image no larger than 10 MB. The clearest results usually come from flat artwork with distinct edges: a simple logo, icon, hand lettering or scanned ink drawing. A photograph contains texture and gradual color changes, so tracing can turn it into many small paths and a much larger SVG. If the goal is to scale a photo, keeping it as a raster image is often more useful than tracing every detail.

Choose black-and-white mode for lettering or a one-color mark, the 8-color mode for flat illustrations, or Detailed when the artwork contains more color variation. More detail can also create a larger SVG. Turn on background removal when you want the foreground separated from a plain background; transparent pixels in the source are treated as white during tracing. For a scan or phone photo, use even lighting, crop away surrounding objects and keep the image straight so the outline is easier to follow. If a color icon gains too many small shapes, try the 8-color setting; if a wordmark becomes hard to read, switch to black and white.

The longest image edge is reduced to 1,000 pixels before tracing when it exceeds that size. This controls the working dimensions, so the result follows the reduced image rather than preserving extra source detail. The browser performs the trace and creates an SVG download on your device. After saving, open the file in your design software and inspect its edges and paths at the size you plan to use; a vector file can scale, but it cannot restore detail that was absent from the source. Check that background removal kept the parts you need and that small counters inside letters remain open at the target size. If the result looks noisy, simplify or crop the source and trace again; if it looks too plain, use a more detailed mode and compare the resulting file before choosing one.

FAQ

Common questions

Will an SVG trace turn my handwriting into a usable font?
No. The converter traces one image into vector paths. A typeable font needs a set of characters and font spacing; use a reference image with AIFontGen to start a new font.
How can I improve a rough or blurred SVG result?
Tracing follows the source edges, so a small or blurred image gives uncertain outlines. Use the sharpest original and try black-and-white mode for text or lettering.
Does the SVG converter upload the source image?
No. Your browser traces the selected image and creates the SVG locally; the source is not sent to our servers.
May I use a traced SVG in commercial work?
You may use the result for any purpose when you have the rights to use the source image.
