A Calligraphr alternative that works without a printer
Calligraphr builds a typeface from a printed sheet that you complete and scan or photograph. AIFontGen can use a printable template too, but you can also write each letter on screen with a finger, stylus or mouse, or photograph a few lines written on any paper. The sections below compare their current input and output options.
| Topic | AIFontGen | Calligraphr |
|---|---|---|
| Handwriting input methods | Draw on screen with a finger, stylus or mouse; upload a photo of six lines on any paper; or use the two-page template. | Complete the printed character grid, then scan or photograph the sheet for upload. |
| Characters missing from the sample | When a photo lacks a readable glyph, AI draws it to match your style and identifies it in the result. Your own accent strokes supply the accent marks. | Only characters entered on the template are included. |
| File format | Each approved version is available as TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2. | TTF and OTF formats. |
| Character range | Your marks form Latin accents; Studio can generate Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese kana or Korean to match the typeface. | Latin is supported, but its FAQ notes that a full Japanese or Korean character set is too large to handle. |
| Editing | Use Studio for spacing changes, custom glyph drawings, AI redraws and Bold or Thin weights. It does not provide randomized variants or ligatures. | Its editor supports glyph changes and multiple variants; Pro adds ligatures and kerning. |
| Starting without payment | Sign-up includes 100 credits. Handwriting generation uses 360 credits; a description-based font starts at 100. | The free account is limited to one font of at most 75 characters at a time. |

Questions
- How can I make a handwriting font without a printer?
- Yes. Use a finger, stylus or mouse to draw each character on screen, or write the six sample lines on any paper and send a photo. A printable template is also available.
- Which glyphs come from my handwriting?
- Screen and template entries are taken from your writing. For a photo, unclear characters are drawn by AI to match your style and listed so you can revise them.
- What commercial rights apply to handwriting fonts?
- Pro and Studio fonts include commercial use under the AIFontGenerator Font License. Calligraphr says its creations are your property to use as you wish.
